Over-the-counter sales of herbal
medicines at Ralph & Evans

Almost our entire stock of herbal medicines is organic or biodynamic, ensuring freedom from any artificial chemicals which could reduce their effectiveness.

The majority of our medicines are grown locally in the UK: we find no need to use a vast array of herbal medicines from elsewhere, as there is a long and successful history of medicinal plants that grow in this country. We consider it is not environmentally friendly to transport herbs long distances from faraway places. We will not use a supplier unless they operate “fair-trade” principles in their business.

Through using locally-sourced herbs we can ensure their quality and authenticity, as well as their freedom from contamination.

All our medicines come from sustainable sources and we will not use any medicines that put the plants themselves at risk through irresponsible harvesting: can your current supplier guarantee you the same excellence?

Our over-the-counter medicines are sold with a maximum adult dose indicated on the back: the reason we cannot give a specific dose is that this should only be done following an individual consultation and assessment. Different people need different doses: a person`s body weight, their metabolic rate and their overall state of health, as well as the strength of the herbal medicine, all come into the reckoning of the dosage.

We believe that it is not possible to give a specific dose on over-the-counter medicines, and do not agree with any policy of indicating specific doses on this type of product. This is in contrast to our prescription medicines, which do come with precise dosages indicated.

Our Duty Herbalist is able to provide advice in the Dispensary or by phone on whether it is best to use the over-the-counter approach or to have a consultation with a herbalist.
